Shelly for UK Smart Homes

Shelly is made by Allterco Robotics, and its relays, dimmers and sensors have become one of the most widely used building blocks for DIY smart homes worldwide — largely because most Shelly devices connect straight to your own Wi-Fi and can be controlled locally over your network, without depending on a cloud service to keep working. If your internet goes down, your lights and switches don’t.

That local-first approach is exactly why Shelly turns up so often in Home Assistant setups: there’s a mature, well-documented integration, and because many devices expose a local API, automations keep running even if a wider internet connection drops. The same devices also work with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa and Google Home, so you’re not locked into one ecosystem from day one.

For UK homes specifically, two things matter more than the spec sheet suggests. First, a lot of older UK properties have lighting circuits with no neutral wire at the switch — Shelly’s no-neutral relay and dimmer variants are built for exactly that, so you don’t need to run new cabling to retrofit smart lighting. Second, the Shelly Pro range is DIN-rail mounted, which means it fits a standard UK consumer unit or enclosure rather than sitting behind a switch plate — the right choice when you want a proper installation, not a bodge.

Whether you’re starting with a single Shelly Plus 1 to automate one circuit, or planning a whole-house rollout with Shelly Pro gear in the consumer unit, every product on this site links back to the category and specs you need to plan the job properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a smart hub to use Shelly devices?

Most Shelly Wi-Fi devices (the Plus, Pro, Gen3 and Gen4 ranges) connect straight to your home Wi-Fi router and don’t need a separate hub. The Shelly Wave range uses Z-Wave instead of Wi-Fi, so it needs a Z-Wave gateway. Shelly BLU devices are Bluetooth-only and need a Shelly Gateway or another Shelly Gen2+/Gen3 device nearby to bridge them onto your network.

Will Shelly work with Home Assistant, Alexa or Google Home?

Yes. Shelly has a well-supported Home Assistant integration, and most Wi-Fi models can be controlled locally without going through Shelly’s own cloud. The same devices also work with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home, either natively or via the Shelly Cloud/Matter where supported.

What’s the difference between Shelly Plus, Pro, Wave and BLU?

Plus and Gen3/Gen4 devices are the general-purpose Wi-Fi + Bluetooth range, designed to fit behind a standard UK back box. Pro devices are DIN-rail mounted for a consumer unit or enclosure, built for higher current and professional installs. Wave devices use the Z-Wave protocol instead of Wi-Fi. BLU devices are small, battery-powered Bluetooth sensors and buttons that bridge onto your network through another Shelly device.

Do Shelly relays need a neutral wire?

Some do and some don’t — check the individual product page. Shelly’s “no-neutral” variants (like the 1L/2L range) are designed for older UK lighting circuits that only have a live and switched-live at the switch, which is common in properties without rewired lighting circuits.

What’s your delivery and returns policy?

See our Delivery & Returns page for shipping costs and timescales. As a UK consumer, you also have a legal right to cancel most orders within 14 days of delivery.
